Why doesn't KPS Accept Insurance?

Privacy: Insurance companies often require access to your session notes for routine audits. Keeping insurance out of the therapy room protects & ensures your privacy.

No Mandatory Diagnosis: Insurance billing requires a formal mental health diagnosis, even when therapy is focused on growth, life transitions, or relationship dynamics where a diagnosis isn't clinically indicated, necessary, or helpful.

Accessibility: Most insurance plans do not cover relationship/couples therapy, only cover a limited number of sessions, and don't allow sliding scale agreements. By remaining private pay, we have the freedom to offer sliding-scale options and tailor our work to what you actually need, rather than what an insurance company approves.

Where is KPS Located?

KPS is predominately a telehealth (virtual) practice. We will meet through SimplePractice, which uses a HIPAA compliant telehealth platform. Virtual sessions are offered in UT & MO at this time, though expansion to other states is pending (psypact).

In-person sessions may be available in the St. Louis, MO area, dependent on availability.

Yes! Limited evening & weekend hours are available based on clinician availability.

I will give you and your partner(s) a call. We will chat about availability, what you're hoping to work on, costs, and schedule our first appointment if it's a good fit. This is a great opportunity to ask me any questions you have about me, my therapeutic style, or our policies and procedures.

You don't need to be in a crisis to attend relationship therapy. In fact, preventative therapy is very helpful! Therapy is appropriate for relationships of all types and both big and small concerns are "enough" for therapy.

Who are Good Candidates for Therapy Intensives?

I ask couples to commit to bi-weekly (every other week) sessions to support optimal therapeutic effectiveness. Weekly sessions can be available upon request.

What is a Relationship Therapy Intensive, and How is it Different from Weekly Therapy?

Intensives are ideal for people who have time-constraints and would struggle to commit to ongoing sessions due to busy work schedules, travel, or child/eldercare. They are a good fit for partners who are hesitant or reluctant about ongoing couples therapy, but still want to experience rapid improvement in their relationship. Relationships undergoing major transitions such as opening up a relationship, or deciding to stay together or break up, would be a good fit.

Do You Offer Therapy for Multi-Partner Relationships, Triads, or Polyamorous Constellations?

Therapy intensives are extremely helpful for many, but are not clinically appropriate for every relationship. An intensive is not recommended if there is an active or recent substance use problem, domestic violence, or acute mental health crises (e.g. high suicidality, psychosis). Therapy intensives are not a good fit for partners who are already actively checked out and intending to end the relationship.

Therapy intensives would likely not be a good fit for people with severe attachment trauma, intense therapist mistrust, or those who need to gain safety with a therapist over time to feel comfortable opening up.

Are There Situations Where A Therapy Intensive Is NOT Recommended?

Yes! While "couples therapy" is the most commonly searched term online for relationship therapy, my practice provides therapy for people in all relational configurations including dyads, triads, quads, polyamorous constellations, and multi-partner networks. No need to explain or defend your relationship here.

What Does "ENM Affirming" or "Kink Positive" Therapy Mean?

Being ENM (Ethical Non-Monogamy) Affirming means that my practice affirms non-monogamous relationship structures such as polyamory, open relationships, and relationship anarchy. Being kink-positive means BDSM, kink, sex work, and alternative sexual preferences or sexualities are normalized and respected in my practice. Relationship structures and consensual sexual preferences will never be judged or pathologized here.

What if One/Both/All Partners are Neurodivergent? (ADHD, ASD)

KPS loves neurospicy folks! Dr Rogers has ADHD herself.

Neurodivergent people experience unique challenges in relationships related to executive dysfunction, communication preferences, and sensory needs. KPS honors neurodivergent brain differences and has specialized treatment tools to cater to your specific needs and challenges, focusing on minimizing the need to mask, dismantling neurotypical relationship expectations and scripts, and improving understanding and support for all partners.

What if My Partner is Hesitant or Resistant to Starting Therapy?

This is such a normal barrier to treatment. Partners often worry about being blamed or ganged up on in the therapy room, or having to face hard conversations. It can be scary at first to open up to a stranger. It is important to understand that I do not take sides and strive to be as non-biased as possible. Therapy can be uncomfortable, and there is no avoiding that completely– it is actually a necessary requirement for growth at times. But it is my priority to create a warm, safe space for partners to be themselves and express themselves freely.

During our free consultation call, I encourage hesitant partners to use that as an opportunity to ask questions and assess fit, understanding that there is zero pressure to commit to an intake appointment.

How Do We Stop Having the Same Argument Over and Over When One of Us Shuts Down?

This dynamic is a very common concern that many couples come to therapy to resolve. Sometimes this dynamic occurs because of the “Anxious/Avoidant Trap.” Often, this conflict cycle is created and maintained by all partners– even if it doesn’t seem or feel that way.

Fixing this problem requires understanding the pattern, identifying underlying triggers and unmet attachment needs, and learning new ways of regulating, communicating, and engaging with each other.

How Do We Fix Feeling More Like Roommates Than Partners?

Feeling more like roommates than partners is a normal experience for many partners, especially those that have been together for a long time, have recently had children, have different sexual drives, or who struggle with common intimacy issues.

We can explore this dynamic together, creating a plan to overcome barriers, improve intimacy, and learn new solutions. Changing this dynamic is possible!

How Do I Bring Up Feeling Unheard Without Triggering My Partner's Defensiveness?

Defensiveness is a common avoidant defence mechanism that people learn to engage in to keep themselves safe from feeling like a bad person or partner. The solution to this problem requires all partners to learn new ways of communicating feelings and engaging with feedback, as well as understanding and challenging old attachment wounds.

I have SO much I could say about this topic, but I feel confident that I can help you break old cycles and create new relationship patterns if we work together.

How Do We Know if Our Relationship is Fixable or Fundamentally Incompatible?

Most partners who are willing to show up and do the work are capable of creating long-term, satisfying relationships! No matter who you choose to be with, all partners have fundamental incompatibilities and non-fixable problems– that is just what it means to be human and have different upbringings and nervous systems. When we can accept that there are always going to be some non-fixable differences, we can focus our time and attention on the fixable issues and create lasting change that improves relationship satisfaction.

For example: Your partner has ADHD and struggles with time management. They are always running late and you are always on time. They also tend to get defensive about running late and seem to invalidate why it bothers you. Your partner may always struggle with time management due to ADHD executive dysfunction (non-fixable). However, you and your partner can learn to communicate about this differently and avoid the defensiveness and invalidation (fixable) that leaves you feeling unheard and misunderstood.
